Indeed it is true that there are many forms of languages. While the oral and the written forms are the most conventional, there have been various other forms that are used in expressing certain feelings and emotions. It is funny how these graphical representations seem to have united all the races all over the world into understanding what a specific graphical illustrations means. The most popular of these is the smiley.

The smiley is a graphical representation of a smiling face. Undeniably, smiley has become one of the most popular emoticons that are used all over the world. Generally, the smiley is represented as a yellow circle with a half circle mouth, and two black dot eyes. Although other colors are also adopted for smilies, yellow is the favorite of all.

The first smiley was created by Harvey Ball as he was working with State Mutual Life Assurance Company as an artist. Many years after, there were many versions of the smiley until it finally evolved into the smiley that we now know.

On the other hand, smiley is just but one of the many emoticons that were developed to represent mood and facial expression. Such form of expression warns and alerts the responder of the mood of the writer and bases his response from this. As such it is vital that the appropriate emoticon is used in trying to express an emotion, feeling, or mood. Although emoticons are clearly designed to clearly represent the appropriate mood, misinterpretations cannot be avoided at times.

While emoticons are just widely used recently in the past two decades or so, it is worth knowing that these were actually used way back in the 19th century yet. There are standard emoticons that are used by most people, but there are also emoticon styles that are specific to a certain group of people. An example of this is how the Western emoticons are written. Basically, the Western emoticon is written from left to right, thus the eyes is seen on the left, succeeded b y the nose and the mouth. Moreover, a colon is used in representing the eyes of a face. On the other hand, the Eastern emoticons use styles that are native to their location.

Today, there are a lot of digital forms of emoticons that are found in the internet. In fact, many websites offer free emoticons and smilies in various styles and formats. Some of these are even animated. Most of all, these emoticons are easily downloadable. No matter how emoticons and smilies are represented, it is amazing how these are able to send messages across. Anime, the second title in our 72dpi series, presents formative (web) design in motion. Anime documents the manifold possibilities of interactive animated graphics, not only in the WWW, laying special focus on applications that combine user-related interaction and animation (e.g. interactive information, flash, game animation, web-cartoons, film/photo collage and interfaces). As a documentary medium, Anime functions both as an indicator as well as a catalyst of creative progression. Starting out from interactive animation as the central theme, Anime strives to document and examine the intersections between animation and interaction, aesthetics and technique, storytelling and dialogue, dramaturgy and production, skills and tools, experiment and usability. The included interactive DVD allows for a presentation of rule-defying works that go far beyond the WWW’s given limits.
