When one thinks about the way television has evolved over the past twenty years, several things stand out, but perhaps most significantly is the rise of animated series that are directed towards adults. In the past, cartoons have generally been thought of as shows that were made for children, but much more recently a large number of shows have emerged that have changed that stereotype. The genre of animated television series has really changed dramatically over the past several years to the point where a satellite TV network dedicates a whole block of time to airing these adult-oriented shows. If you haven’t been watching animated series, you can check out Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” to find several great shows, or just browse your satellite TV listings for some of the great shows listed below.
Futurama was created in the late 1990s by Matt Groening, the same person who created the highly successful show The Simpsons. Although Futurama wasn’t quite as successful as it’s predecessor, it ran for four very successful seasons. The show then aired for another four years in reruns on satellite TV channels, during which time it developed a large cult-following. The resurgence of the show’s popularity led to several new storylines being released directly to DVD, which were then later transformed into regular episodes and aired on TV In 2010, Fox Network began production of new episodes again, which has really pleased fans all over the world. If you haven’t already seen the show, be sure to catch up on some of the past episodes so you can enjoy the new ones. Futurama follows the story of Fry, a New Yorker who was accidentally frozen for 1000 years. When he gets thawed out 1,000 years later, a lot of things have changed, but the problems society faces are still generally the same. A lot of the humor of the show revolves around Fry’s interaction with futuristic robots and other characters, but much of it also relates to how the same societal problems seem to exist throughout history. Futurama is arguably the most innovative animated series on TV, so make sure you watch it on your satellite TV networks if you haven’t already!
Daria is another animate series that developed quite a cult-following. The series aired for five years from 1997-2002, and tells the story of a pessimistic high school-aged young woman named Daria. The show is a spin-off of Beavis and Butthead, where her character first appeared, but other than it’s origin, the two shows share little else in common. The comedic elements of the show derive from Daria’s insightful but negative understanding of the boring world she lives in. Daria isn’t cool in her world, but audiences tend to wish they were as cool and witty as her character is. If you haven’t seen this hilarious show, be sure to look for it in your satellite TV listings. You don’t want to miss this satirical show about suburban life and the typical American high school experience!
