Are anime fans killing the anime industry?
As someone who is into animation and comics(in general) I have been hearing alot about the problems of the anime industry in the West.
Is it true that anime fans are “killing” the industry by only watching anime and reading manga online?
I know the music industry is fine, with the release of ipods and mp3 players, but how can downloading anime/manga for free can have such a big impact?
Yeah, fans are killing the industry.The downloading has such a big impact b/c nobody buys anything anymore. Many of them seem to go by that old saying, “Why buy it when I can get it for free?” If nobody buys the DVDs or the manga, then the companies don’t make any money, which means they can’t afford the licensing fees for new shows/manga. It costs a lot of money to license stuff from the Japanese owners, and even more to dub and package them. If companies can’t recoup the costs, they end up going out of business (like Geneon) or get into financial trouble (like ADV and Tokyopop).
BTW, there’s nothing wrong with occasionally downloading stuff, especially if the show isn’t licensed yet, but I wish people would support the industry more…before there isn’t an industry to support anymore.
